Large number of submissions
New York Construction magazine recently announced the winning projects in the scope of the Best of 2010 Awards. The judges, who reviewed a total of 180 submissions, a 20% increase over the previous year, were impressed by the quality of the projects that were submitted for the 2010 competition.
A total of 32 awards were presented, which represents 13 fewer than in 2009. Two Structal-Heavy Steel Construction projects were among the winners: New Meadowlands Stadium and Red Bull Arena, both located in the State of New Jersey.
Top winner: New Meadowlands Stadium
New Meadowlands Stadium received top honors as overall project of 2010. Several factors contributed to the victory of this $1.6B sports complex that has been described as a football field disguised as a high-tech showcase.
The Canam Group plants in St. Gédéon (Quebec) and Point of Rocks (Maryland) joined forces to fabricate the 24,000 tons of structural steel components required for this project while InteliBuild produced the drawings and 3D models. In addition to fabrication, Structal’s contract also included the erection of the steel frame.
Project of the year in sports/recreation category: Red Bull Arena
Red Bull Arena, which is home to the NY Red Bulls, was named project of the year in the sports/recreation category. One of the special features of this soccer stadium, which was built at a cost of $200M, is the unique architecture of the roof structure that covers the entire seating area, from the last row to just over the touchlines.
The St. Gédéon and Point of Rocks plants fabricated the 6,050 tons of structural steel components needed for this project while InteliBuild again produced all the drawings and 3D models. As in the case of New Meadowlands Stadium, Structal’s contract also included the erection of the steel frame.
Congratulations to everyone who took part in these two projects!
