Canam Group projects win first place, honorable mentions at SJI 2009 Design Awards

Canam Group projects swept more than half of the awards presented in the scope of the Steel Joist Institute (SJI) 2009 Design Awards. The Vancouver Convention Centre project landed first place in the Non-Industrial category while two other Canam projects received honorable mentions.

Vancouver Convention Centre
Glotman Simpson Consulting Engineers, the firm that oversaw the winning project, was presented with a commemorative plaque by SJI general manager Robert R. Hackworth and two Canam Canada representatives during a brief ceremony that took place last December 8 in Vancouver. The structural engineering firm also received a $2,000 scholarship in their name which they in turn awarded to Max Cronk, a third-year civil engineering student enrolled at the University of British Columbia.

Canam Canada, which supplied over 3,000 tons of joists and steel deck to customer Canron Western Constructors Ltd. as part of the expansion, is proud to have participated in this major project that is in line for LEED Gold certification.

Honorable mentions
The Indianapolis Airport concourse and terminal project, which was engineered by Fink, Roberts, Petrie Consulting Engineers, received an honorable mention. The Canam U.S. plant in Washington, MO, supplied 400 barrel joists to customer Cives Steel for the rolling roof profile. All of the barrel joists required canted seats and deck bearing plates to allow the joists to rest perpendicular to the floors while following the changing slope of the trusses.

The Shepherd University Center for Contemporary Arts project, which was overseen by Robert Silman Associates Engineers, also received an honorable mention. The long- and mid-span joists required for this project were fabricated by the Canam U.S. plant in Point of Rocks, MD, for customer Somerset Steel Erection Co. Inc.
