Province of Quebec
More than $147,000 handed over to Centraide
Once again this year, Canam Group’s workplace campaign to raise funds for Centraide was a resounding success. Organizers collected close to $74,000 from employees, and the company’s matching contribution brought this amount up to $147,711 for Centraide. Money was also raised for two other charitable organizations –Healthpartners-Quebec and the Quebec division of the Canadian Red Cross– which received $2,149 and $1,820 respectively.

Cycling for multiple sclerosis
A group of nine employees from Boucherville, St. Gédéon de Beauce and St. Georges, their spouses and friends participated in the RONA MS Bike Tour held in August. They pedaled 93.2 miles (150 km) over two days to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Their efforts raised over $27,000 for this organization.

Canam Group sponsors the Pinocchios Foundation golf tournament
For the third consecutive year, Canam Group sponsored the Pinocchios Foundation’s annual fundraiser, which took place at the Club de golf de la Madeleine in the Montérégie region. The golf tournament, which attracted 280 golfers, and the benefit dinner attended by nearly 350 people brought in a total of $83,421. This money will be used to open a respite facility for the Centre de l’épanouissement de l’enfant Pinocchios (CEEP).

Employees donate close to $1,300 on National Denim Day
In May, almost $1,300 was raised by Boucherville, Beauce and Laval employees in the scope of National Denim Day. The funds were turned over to the CURE Foundation to help finance breast cancer research. The fundraiser, which takes place annually in many companies across Canada, invites employees to wear jeans to work in exchange for a $5 donation.

Running to benefit breast cancer research
In October, Canam employees along with their family members and friends participated in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure fundraiser. Participants collected $1,642.57. This amount included money raised through a yard sale, several bake sales and Jeans Days.

Mississauga, ON
Generosity in action
Mississauga employees donated over $1,000 to support earthquake victims in China and $500 to the Sick Kids’ Foundation affiliated with the Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. Over $2,000 was also donated to the International Kids Fund to help cover the cost of surgery needed by a 15-year-old girl from Vietnam to remove an extremely large, benign tumor on the right side of her face.

St. Gédéon de Beauce and St. Georges, QC
Beauce-area employees take up a bike-to-work challenge
In June, 16 Canam and Canam Group employees from St. Gédéon de Beauce and St. Georges cycled to work as part of the fifth edition of Défi Vélo-Boulot. Canam Group donated $5 for each employee who participated in this community effort. These employees biked a total of 270 miles (435 km). The money raised will be used for the ongoing development of a bicycle path in the Beauce-Sartigan region.

Just over $1,000 raised for Opération Enfant Soleil
In May, St. Gédéon de Beauce plant employees were invited to buy sunflower cutouts in support of Opération Enfant Soleil, a not-for-profit organization that raises money for the development of quality pediatric care for sick children throughout the province of Quebec. A sum of $1,001 was presented to Opération Enfant Soleil.

Shaved heads for Leucan
Five Canam employees took part in Défi têtes rasées, an annual head-shaving challenge held by Leucan to raise funds for children living with cancer. A total of $2,210 was collected for this great cause.

St. Georges, QC
Walk to Cure Diabetes
The Walk to Cure Diabetes organized by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was held in June on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City. Marie-Claude Mayrand, programmer-analyst, was there with her two daughters, Félixe and Gabrielle, both of whom have been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Thanks to the generosity of friends, relatives and co-workers, they raised $1,478.

St. Georges employees get involved in social integration
In May, a fundraising activity took place in the Beauce region thanks to the initiative of Claude Provost, vice president of human resources, as well as the participation of François Bégin, communications manager, and Marie-Noëlle Goulet, communications advisor, who both work at the St. Georges office. A play based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s most famous novella, The Little Prince, was presented in St. Georges in order to raise funds for the Association pour l’intégration sociale (AIS). A sum of $2,300 was presented to the AIS.

Relay for Life
On the evening of May 31, a number of Beauce-area employees, including Dominique Isabel, Marlène Leclerc, Claude Paquet, Sylvianne Quirion, Robert Quirion, Patricia Dumas, Jonathan Morin, Sandra Gauthier and Linda Boutin as well as Valérie Lessard, who works at the Boucherville office, took part in the Relay for Life event in St. Georges. Relay for Life is a 12-hour overnight walk that takes place simultaneously in hundreds of communities across Canada to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. A total of $2,380 was collected.

Claremont, NH
Eastern Bridge gives to the Claremont Soup Kitchen
Jay Weeden, purchasing and IT manager for Eastern Bridge, presented a $250 cheque on behalf of the company to the Claremont Soup Kitchen, an emergency feeding organization that serves approximately 85 low-income people on a daily basis.

Jacksonville, FL
A special connection with a nearby elementary school
This marks the second consecutive year that employees have had an affiliation with Ramona Boulevard Elementary School. Through an employee fund and a partnership with one of the plant’s office suppliers, the Jacksonville plant outfitted the school with pens, pencils, notebooks, paper and other school supplies. The plant regularly passes on its used ink cartridges to the school for recycling. The recycling of these cartridges generates a profit, which the school uses to fund its special programs.

Employees rally for breast cancer
Plant employees and the company raised $500 to support the first Susan G. Komen mammogram hot line in Florida. They collected dollar bills from co-workers and pinned them together to form a long chain symbolizing the mammogram hotline. Also called the M-Line, the mammogram hotline was created to make sure all women get a mammogram, even those who can’t afford one or don’t know where to turn.

“Dressing down” for a good cause
Employees were allowed to wear casual clothes to work for every five non-perishable food items they brought in during the last week of July. The food was donated to the local foodbank, which provides food to families who are experiencing financial difficulties and cannot afford to buy groceries.

Canam employees take part in the second Annual Catoctin Aqueduct Benefit 10 & 5K Run-Walk
Employees who participated in this benefit run-walk held in September contributed over $300 towards the restoration of the Catoctin Aqueduct. This aqueduct is a historic canal structure that in the early 20th century was a hub of transportation, business and culture for the region and all of the United States.

Fighting breast cancer with sweets
In October, credit department employees dressed up as Oompa-Loompas, fictional creatures featured in the film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and sold candy bars to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. The department collected $250 from employees and, with management’s matching contribution, presented the foundation with $500 to help in the fight against breast cancer.

Employees roll up their sleeves to save lives
The Canam office had a great turnout for its first American Red Cross blood drive in August. An estimated 54 lives were saved thanks to the generosity of the 18 donors who signed up.

Washington, MO
A donation for wearing casual attire
Canam Washington has begun encouraging employees to wear casual clothing one week out of the month for a charitable monthly donation of $10. To date, over $600 has been raised. The proceeds will be presented to a worthy charity sometime in December. This charitable event is the brainchild of Coralee Johnson, division sales manager, and Bev Carter, purchasing manager.

A bake sale for charity
Justine Hinson, lead hand (long-span production), organized a bake sale to help raise funds for USW Local 8139’s “Adopt-a-Family” program. Justine’s efforts raised $300, which she used to buy clothing, shoes, food and medicine for a needy family in the Washington area.

A Washington employee cycles for MS
Rob Baumann, regional sales manager, was among the 2,000 cyclists who participated in the MS Bike Tour held in September by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in Columbia, MO. Rob and his team logged 122 miles (196 km) over a two-day period and raised $2,283.

‘Tis the season for the foster children
Washington plant employees got together and donated a large amount of children’s clothes destined for kids living in foster care. The clothes were each wrapped individually as a Christmas gift and turned over to the Foster and Adoptive Care Coalition (FACC), a non-profit agency that is one of the area’s largest recruiter of foster/adoptive homes.

Employees rally to help a co-worker
In February, Jeremy Generally (short-span production) was seriously injured in an automobile accident. Dave Pahlmann and Sally Maiden (also short-span production) organized a raffle in order to assist Jeremy with his medical expenses. The raffle raised nearly $500.

Fundraiser for a co-worker’s child and two colleagues
Employees at the Technyx office in Kolkata held a fundraiser to come to the aid of a co-worker’s son as well as two support service staff members hired through an agency. Argha, aged 3 1/2, the only child of Santanu Pal, a detailer on the joist team, was diagnosed with cancer and admitted to a hospital in Southern India for chemotherapy. Two separate funds were created—one for Santanu’s son and the other for the two support service staff members—to help cover the cost of their medical treatments.

The gift of life
When Murox team leader Monica Turcu’s colleagues found out that her mother-in-law had to undergo heart surgery, several people immediately came forward and donated the blood needed to perform the life-saving operation.
