Canam Group takes top honors at the 2008 CISC-Quebec Awards of Excellence

CISC-Quebec, the Quebec division of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, held the 11th edition of its Steel Design Awards of Excellence last November 4 in Montreal, QC. A number of projects completed by two Canam Group business units, Canam Canada and Structal-Bridges, had been nominated and were subsequently presented with awards during the course of the evening in four of the seven categories in contention.

Commercial/Institutional Projects category
The expansion project at the Jean-Lesage Airport in Quebec City won in the Commercial/Institutional Projects category for the purity of the architectural design, the esthetic details of the connections and the use of a 3D model that was shared by the engineer and the fabricator. The steel structure was an important aspect of the building’s original and innovative design.

Residential/Renovation Projects category
The Alfredo-Gagliardi residential project in Montreal, which sits atop a busy Jean-Talon Metro Station entrance, took the Residential/Renovation Projects category for its ability to tackle technical constraints through the use of eccentric bracing and an optimal distribution of space. A steel structure and Hambro flooring were also chosen for this project to limit the loads on the metro station below.

Panel’s Choice category
The Espace 400e Pavilion project in Quebec City won the hearts of the panel judges who recognized the rallying effect of the building’s facade, its positive impact on its surroundings and the overall transparent, graceful flow of the structure. The use of vertical steel joists helped to minimize the load requirements and address the challenges created by the building’s curtain wall.

Industrial/Bridge Projects category
Phase 2 of the Kicking Horse Canyon Bridge project in Golden, BC, stood out from other nominees in the Industrial/Bridge Projects category because of its sleek design and harmonious integration in the surrounding natural environment as well as an ambitious erection schedule. This 1,300-ft. (400-metre) bridge, stands at an altitude of 5,250 ft. (1,600 m)!
