Canam celebrates its 50th anniversary

2010 marks Canam Group’s 50th anniversary. Canam Steel Works Inc., the group’s first entity, was founded on August 15, 1960 by Gilberte Lacroix-Dutil, Roger Dutil and an American investor, Albert Goldberg. The word Canam, which is a fusion of the first syllables of Canada and America, was created after the name St. Georges Steel Works Inc. was declined.

Construction of the company’s first plant, a 12,800-sq. ft. facility in St. Gédéon de Beauce, began in the winter of 1960-1961. Fabrication officially started on May 5, 1961 with a dozen seasonal employees.

Marcel Dutil, Canam Group’s current chairman of the board and chief executive officer, started taking part in the company’s activities in 1963 and later became the sole proprietor in 1972. The company made its stock market debut in 1984 and growth was fueled mainly by acquisitions, particularly in the U.S. and Canada.
Today, Canam Group is one of the largest fabricators of construction products in North America. The company operates 27 manufacturing plants and engineering offices in Canada, the United States, Romania, India and China, and has partnerships with companies in several other countries. Canam Group employs over 3,000 people.
This growth was made possible thanks to the hard work of its talented and dedicated employees, and especially, its loyal customers and business partners.
From the very start, Canam Group employees have been motivated by a passion to provide each customer with high-quality products and on-time delivery. This is why we chose “Building with passion” as the theme for our 50th anniversary.
Canam Group is reigning in this 50th anniversary with enormous pride and confidence.
